Throughout the history of Western civilization, architectural and furniture
embellishments have drawn on powerful elements found in nature. In the European
tradition, the concept of a tree with an extremely sturdy trunk, and bearing branches
that reach out in in all directions, became a metaphor for the family.
The central medallion depicts a cross-section of a tree. From the strength and
stability of the tree's trunk, branches are nourished by the life-sustaining water and
nutrients that the trunk draws from the earth.
The new jade (serpentine) stone from which the medallion is hand-carved, symbolizes
