The animal medallion is hand carved from
bone and then often etched using scrim-
shaw techniques. The disc portrays the
process of growth -- that from small
beginnings, through growth we reach out
in all directions to make more of our-
selves. But while most species are
guided by millions of years of instinct, we
humans have evolved an enormous
capacity for heightened consciousness.
This informed decision-making ability
makes us doubly privileged to be able to
direct much of our future, as well as
serve as stewards for all living things.
To the extent we come to know animals
throughout our lives, we come to better
know ourselves. The more kindness we
extend, the more human we become.
