In ancient China, a carving like this one was placed on the home's doors behind the
handle. The central medallion is hand carved from serpentine stone which is a
symbol for the gentle kindness we need to extend to ourselves and those we love.
The dragons depicted on the medallion are there to assure the safety and protection
of the home and all its inhabitants. In Chinese culture dragons are recognized as the
most powerful symbol for Chi, that is, energy. So powerful is this energy that dragons
are even believed capable of bringing rains that can wash away the flames of a
harmful fire.
You can choose to apply this symbol to the present as a reminder that your home is
your sanctuary - that special place where you gather loved ones into a safe retreat
from the hectic pace and uncertainty that charactize our world. For the home
achieves its ultimate meaning when it serves as the most constant place in which we
can replenish our authentic selves. We do this by not only attending to the physical
safety and integrity of the home, but also by selecting specific elements and
furnishings that provide optimal comfort, relaxation, function, and privacy.
Our home is our blank canvas in which we can choose to provide micro-environments
that are custom-made to the needs of each individual. For in our homes we have the
opportunity to create the sounds, sights, smells, textures, and tastes that bring
nourishment to both the body and the spirit.
The trends of society today or tomorrow have little to do with the measure of a
home's worth. Rather worth is vested in the way in which the home offers solace and
inspiration as a springboard for the dreams upon which life is built. No matter the
challenges and stresses posed by life home is the one place we need to specially
