The animal medallion is hand carved
from bone, and then often etched using
the scrimshaw techniques developed by
whalers of centuries past. The natural
mineral beads remind us that all animals
share the same earth. But while most
species are predominately guided by
thousands of years of instinct, we hu-
mans have evolved an enormous capa-
city for heightened consciousness. This
insight teaches us that we are privileged
to be the stewards of all members of the
animal kingdom. To the extent we come
to know and love animals throughout our
lives, we come to better know ourselves.
The more kind and compassionate we
are toward all living things, the more
human we become.

technique of scrimshaw. The ability of these artisans to use their
dexterous hands to deftly carve art forms out of the inert ox bone, is a
distinctly human activity. So too, is the ability to read.
The complexity of human language, especially in written form, has
in great part distinguished our species from all others. Reading is
a learned application of our vast capacity for heightened consci-
ousness. We truly know what we have read, and can integrate
this new information with all the other bits and pieces of data that
we have gathered from all our life experiences. This process
allows us to create wisdom out of what we read. First and foremost,
this confers the opportunity to distinguish fact from fiction.
We can discern shades of meaning, exaggeration, faction
(fiction based on some facts), statistics taken out of context,
just to name a few of the many judgements we can readily make to
form and translate our values for the enrichment of our lives.
Reading can entertain us and make us experience our emotions
more deeply and widely. We can better understand varying viewpoints,
as well as different times and cultures. Through reading we can
achieve a state of relaxation, far away from the concerns of daily
life. And once there, we can charge our imagination with renewed
energy and spirit so that we become ever more truly human.
